Todd Hido @ Rose Gallery

Todd Hido (born 1968, Kent, Ohio) is an American contemporary artist and photographer. Currently based in San Francisco, much of Hido’s work involves urban and suburban housing across the U.S., of which the artist produces large, highly detailed and luminous color photographs. Hido's photographs reveal isolation and anonymity in contemporary suburbia. Eerily lit rooms and suddenly abandoned homes increase the effect of loneliness and loss.

THIS los angeles is pleased to present Turbo Lover, an exhibition of new works by Thom Lessner. The unique works on display include paintings, painted paper sculptures, and hand sewn felt signs. Lessner’s work draws a good deal of influence from 1980s popular culture and rock bands. Whether it’s references to caricatured rock gods, teenage collections, the artist studio, or hand made fan signs, the works serve as stand-ins holding the place for a desired myth while also paying homage to personal heroes.

Thom Lessner is a native Ohioan currently living in Philadelphia. Thom’s parodied renditions of 80s pop culture figures have become his signature style. Thom is an ardent skateboarder and rock n’ roll star in the costume-clad band Sweetheart. Thom has done work for and with POKETO, Shepherd Fairey, and a multitude of magazines including Thrasher, Vice, Swindle, and Spin. Thom’s works have traveled to Los Angeles, New York, and internationally.

Kind Regrets – New Works by Parra

Kind Regrets – New Works by Parra

Opening Reception Sept. 29th, 7 – 10 pm

rsvp: Kind_Regrets@hvw8.com

Parra is known to lovers of his work for the themes and motifs which have become unmistakable and distinctive trademarks of his style. Curved 2 dimensional modern post – pop  images, highly saturated colors, vibrant typographic hand-drawn letters and worlds inhabited by hybrid, bizarre, surreal characters. Men with bird heads, fleshy and voluptuous women with round sensual bodies, mixed with texts and themes that span from sarcastic and introspective to ironic and bold, all the way to nonsensical. Esteemed and popular in the independent scene in the beginning, he quickly became a recognized, creative, and eclectic artist worldwide. Established brands have recruited Parra to customize limited edition products, his hands have illustrated ad campaigns and his works have been shown in various solo exhibitions around the globe. His last show was in the SFMOMA, his first in a U.S. museum.

Exhibition running through Nov. 11th, 2012. HVW8 Art + Design Gallery 661 N. Spaulding Ave, Los Angeles, Ca.

Opening @ Union: Tom Sachs x NIKEcraft

Friday, May 18th Union will host a launch party for Tom Sachs collaboration with NIKEcraft, a clothing collection designed in tandem with his project acting out the current space mission. Sachs and Nike working together is a notable collaboration, as Sachs is well known for lampooning branding and corporations in his artwork. As Fast Company writes: Sachs seems sincerely psyched about working with a company with such a rigorous testing and research team. Each piece in the NIKEcraft collection speaks to the perils of surviving a DIY space mission (if not actually preparing you for one). Some of the pieces are made from actual space-suit material, while others are constructed from car air bags and yacht mainsails. According to Nike, the jacket’s paracord could double as a tourniquet. The periodic table of elements is screenprinted on the inside of its pockets.

You can watch the "mission" as it progresses on Sachs's tumblr, here.

Tom Sachs new exhibit SPACE PROGRAM: Mars opens at the Park Avenue Armory in NYC on May 16th.

Launch party May 18th

Union/ 110 S. LaBrea LA CA/ 7-10pm

Herb Ritts (1952- 2002) had a unique vision that helped shape the look of the 1980's. His use of bold graphic contrast, memorable highlighting of the human form, classical treatment of nudes, and dramatic location shots made icons of his subjects and defined him as one of the top commercial photographers of the decade. His retrospective at the Getty showcases the best of his career, including some incredibly iconic photos.

Jonas Wood at David Kordansky

Jonas Wood at David Kordansky Gallery

March 31, 2012 — May 12, 2012

Opening Reception: March 31, 2012

1977 Born in Boston, Massachusetts  1999 BA Psychology, Hobart and William Smith Colleges 2002 MFA, Painting and Drawing, University of Washington

David Kordansky Gallery is proud to announce its first exhibition of new work by Jonas Wood. The show will open on March 31, 2012, and run through May 12. An opening reception will be held on Saturday, March 31 from 6:00 to 9:00pm.

Making use of sources that are often intimately connected to his own life, Wood nonetheless exemplifies a wide-ranging and expansive view of representational painting and drawing. His practice consists of both analytical and intuitive approaches to composition: domestic and studio interiors, portraits, and imaginary still lifes are rendered according to a keenly felt sense of color and line, and numerous perspectival viewpoints are often combined to form a scene.

Exhibit: Weegee - Naked Hollywood

Weegee Exhibition at MOCA Grand Avenue from 11/13/11 - 2/27/12!

www.moca.org

The tabloid photographer, known as Weegee, moved from New York to Los Angeles in 1947. In doing so he abandoned the crime scenes for which he was famous and started to train his camera in shooting Hollywood stars, strippers, costume shops and naked mannequins. These shots were sometimes distorted by trick lenses and multiple exposures. Naked Hollywood is an exhibition dedicated to the work Weegee produced in Southern California. Alongside these photographs, many of which have never been seen before, his work as an author, filmmaker and photo-essayist is also on display.
